Lock up your pets, a message from a friend

Posted on Apr 24th, 2009 by jilljj : just-being jilljj
Please forgive me that my first post, much less first message is of this nature, but it is something that concerns all of us in this trade. I received th9is message from Craigs list, assuming it to be some hoax or hype, I google’d it [HR669]. Still assuming it to be fake, I visited [See the Actual Bill] this will effect you… below is the original message. No offence but this sounds like the work of Peta

Thanks for Reading , J

HR669 is a piece of legislation being proposed that would ban the possession, sale, or breeding of any nonnative wildlife in the United States . This would affect anyone who keeps pets such as fish (Koi, Gurramies, Cichlids, Bettas, ect.), invertebrates (crustaceans, mollusks, insects, arachnids), reptiles, birds, and mammals (Dogs, Cats, flying squirrels, chinchillas, etc.). It is being reviewed on April 23rd and pet owners are looking to create a large snail mail and phone campaign. Emails aren’t nearly as effective because of spam filters. Please help us by writing your letters today!!! Simply follow the instructions on the video.

Hi, I've read the bill and it doesn't seem too bad.

“This Act and regulations issued
8 under this Act shall not interfere with the ability of any
9 person to possess an individual animal of any species if
10 such individual animal was legally owned by the person
11 before the risk assessment is begun pursuant to subsection
12 (e)(3), even if such species is later prohibited from being
13 imported under the regulations issued under this Act…

“The Secretary shall include
11 in the preliminary list under this section nonnative
12 wildlife species that the Secretary finds, consistent
13 with the factors described in section 3(b) and based
14 on scientific and commercial information that is pro15
vided in a proposal under paragraph (2) or other16
wise available to the Secretary—
17 (A) are not harmful to the United States’
18 economy, the environment, or other animal spe19
cies’ or human health; or
20 (B) may be harmful to the United States’
21 economy, the environment, or other animal spe22
cies’ or human health, but already are so wide23
spread in the United States that it is clear to
24 the Secretary that any import prohibitions or

1 restrictions would have no practical utility for
2 the United States.”

What do you think?

Sorry Nicole but I'll be blunt: some people are generally ok with being
told how and what to do about everything, not me. I think it's
dangerous territory and loss of more freedom. I have a vested interest
in keeping our horse (which is from Canada). I also think it is an
arrogant stance toward other countries when we should be engaging in
peaceful trade & negotiations. Do I think it's ok? No, not at all.
Would you have someone tell you next about how to have kids?

Jill

Hi Jill, good news. The hearing on April 23rd went well and the bill may be dead in the water:

The pivotal word “May” remains to be proven. It ain't over til it's over, and then sometimes it still may not be over if there is only one person pushing for it.
In the meantime, people drop off former cute kittens that became cats at our farm and expect us to take care of them because it's a farm. What happens? the cats might already be declawed, they can't fend for themselves which can mean they starve, we can't afford to feed all of them, they get possible rabies, ringworm, other diseases, etc………….I am not a vet or an animal shelter and it's not my cat. In this case I think organizations could do better by taking this as a problem to solve by rounding them up and taking care of them (the existing problems) instead of spending and wasting so much on rediculous acts and laws and lobbying & “setting them free” to a life like that.
